Our Story
Ninho do Tejo was born from a simple question, repeated through sleepless nights and mornings begun again: why is it so hard to find truly well-made pieces for the first months of life?
We were looking for materials that respected a baby's skin. Cuts designed for someone still discovering their own body. An aesthetic that did not infantilise, yet did not try to turn a newborn into a miniature adult either. With effort, we would find one piece here, another there — scattered across dozens of brands, coming from dozens of shops, with no coherence between them.
From that scattering came the idea of bringing together, in a single place, what we ourselves would have liked to find.
Curation, not making
Ninho do Tejo does not make clothes. We choose them. It's a distinction that matters to us.
We work with a small set of European brands, whose pieces we select one by one, with the same attention we would give to choosing for our own children to wear. Three criteria guide every decision, and we do not compromise on them: noble materials — cotton, linen, muslin — of European origin whenever possible; ergonomic cut, suited to the real stages of a baby's development; and timeless aesthetic, that outlasts trends and lets a piece be passed down, when the time comes, to a younger sibling.
With the Portuguese brands we work with, we try to do things face to face. We visit the ateliers, we meet the people who cut, who sew, who pack. With the European brands we haven't yet been able to visit, we keep close communication — and when we get there, we'll visit them too. Either way, no piece enters the catalogue without first passing through our hands.
Azeitão, as a starting point
We operate from Azeitão, at the foot of the Serra da Arrábida. It is where we live, and where we wish to keep growing. Portugal is the heart of our operation; we also serve Spain, with the same attention and care.
We are a couple with two small children — a boy and a girl. Everything we know about what works and what doesn't in the first months, we learned from them. That is the experience we want to share with those who choose us: beyond the pieces we sell, we are genuinely here to talk, to advise, and to support in anything a newly-formed family may need.
We started small, replying personally to every message and packing each order by hand. We want to grow — that's the plan — but we want to grow without losing what defines us today: closeness with those who speak to us, and care for detail at every step.
What guides us
We believe that a well-made piece lasts longer, costs less over time, and leaves a smaller mark on the planet. We believe that the first months deserve the same rigour with which we choose what we ourselves wear — because a newborn's skin is, if anything, more sensitive to the difference between what is well-made and what is rushed.
And we believe, above all, that our work ends when a piece arrives at the home of the person who bought it. If anything ever went wrong, we are at your full disposal. That is the one part of the business where we do not apply curation: the answer is always yes.
The curation that began with the first months is also growing with our customers' children — and so the catalogue keeps widening, one piece at a time, into the early years.
